This past week…

As mentioned in my previous blog I went home for the week to do Little Shop of Horrors and I have to say it’s an awesome show to play and watch! Highly recommend it. Here’s my setup below!

The week seemed like I was there for months so it must have been me making the most of Bath. Here’s what I did and do do as soon as I get up – improvise and create. Finishing studies and entering a new passage in life is like beginning 1st year again. It’s all about ‘the journey’ and ‘finding yourself’ 😀

Don’t get me wrong I love Cardiff and sometimes it’s nice to be able to do my day-to-to activities as I wish – though I will miss being at the RWCMD with all the experiences. Today is the day we all find out our results and the 31 days we have left will most definitely become reality. Even more so, flights are booked an Brazil is officially happening! Woop! More travels to strengthen my world percussion playing to come next year (hopefully)

This week is REPCo rehearsals (student lead concerts) for the gig next week.

REPCo has brought me back in what is now an unfamiliar setting

It’s also Jazz week with many exams/performances taking place inc. travelling to London to see Django Bates (check out his album here) and from there I set on the final part of the rwcmd journey to perform the Opera, The Magic Flute! Go to the rwcmd website to see what’s on!

So I’m going to love you and leave you for today. Have a great week one and all and I’ll be back for more and news on today’s verdict!

This past week…

Don’t * * * * just be nice!

The title is based on what one of my good friends said with a raised voice and a Northern accent that would make anybody’s day. No matter about the implied expletive (open to interpretation) what he said is rather true.

Alas, I’m no longer a student. With a 4-year degree finished and a sudden realisation that you’re entirely dependent on yourself (exciting!!) and with no masters to prepare for (no way, not now….if at all…!?) and that that title makes a whole lot of sense.

It’s funny because in the 3rd and final year you begin to think you’re “outside” of the bubble, the bubble of a close and intense environment. Never did I think or imagine the real sensation of being outside of the bubble. It felt like space, I mentally and physically crashed and now from a different and new view point it’s clear that no matter how clued up on human relations you are….you won’t see eye-to-eye with everybody and you see that some are just consumed in their world and their bubble…..and for what? Why? Just be nice!

As an acquaintance once said;

There’s more to life than just being stuck in a box practicing all day.

So the past 5 days has been a roller coaster and a plan-daily fest. Now with no ties, it’s time get to action. It won’t be an over night job but who knows what lies ahead.

For those who have been supporting me up to now…THANK YOU! It will have been a year this September since my first post and it’s been great to see you guys follow the journey with me.

Out of the blue

Sorry! It’s been a little while since I last blogged. There are lots of things going on at the moment: just think organising, prepping, rehearsals for my performance 2 weeks tomorrow,  beginning the adventures of one of my business ideas, learning a show in a day, forward planning….mind=blown.

So what’s it all about today? Well I had a very short and intense learning experience. I received ‘THE call’. Yes that one that is a dream and has everything going for it.

I’m talking about

that sweet gig

Alas, it was not meant to be. The rush of a drop out and necessity of having a player ready was all too much in the end. If I wasn’t going to Brazil, perhaps this may be a different story, perhaps I just wasn’t ready and maybe it’s simply meant to be?!

The moment you find out that you didn’t get the gig is a heart crushing moment. It’s tough and I’m sure you guys have all experienced it too. Why not comment below your experiences? 🙂 From this experience it is of course natural to have a low dip but it’s how you come out on the other side.

The next day it was a necessity to power on through and carry on. Carry on working on my projects, carry on working on the goals you set everyday. Never giving up on your goal. To send out a message. Your message. What’s your message guys? As I said sometimes it’s meant to be and this open statement gives you momentum; it’s as if along the way on a few opportunities (life learning lessons) are thrown at you. Letting you have those thoughts, provoking a spark of motivation. Check out Quarta 330 – Sunset Dub – I don’t know what it is, but the striking simplicity yet complexity sparks that motivation!

“He who would take your cloak, let him take your other cloak also” – Matthew 5:40

Adapted and quoted from Kahlil Gibran – The collected works

Let the power of meaning drive your momentum forwards to what you’re doing in the moment to achieve what you want to achieve, to do what you want to achieve. Failing and learning and failing again to get better. So let somebody tell you there criticism and ask why they think this = improve on it = Be the better version each and everyday.

Life is for living. Live it and love it. Live the Life of a Musician

A little note…

It’s the night before NYE and it’s going to be epic. Who’s excited? I’ll be heading to Nottingham to see some of my favourite artists such as Bicep, Artwork and Redlight! What are you guys doing?!

Apart from the final bash of 2017. As I wrote in my previous post, I will be heading out to Cuba next week so I’ll be back and raring to go in 3 weeks time!! Can’t wait to share it with you guys.

I’ve been working hard on my Afro-Cuban folkloric music amongst all of my other musical endeavours that’ll be happening in the New Year. Busy time but great times!

That’s all for today! I’ll leave you here with some of my favourite tunes, to get you running into 2018 with positivity, drive and passion to be the better version of yourself.

A little note…

What’s been going on?!

I’ve been away for a 2 weeks exactly and it certainly doesn’t feel like it! It’s really flown by and I unintentionally missed last weeks’ weekly Sunday Blog as I’ve been super busy (except the week where I took a Break)

So what have I been up to?

Looks like I could only hack one week after college finished…and I was back in the ‘diff trialling a street performance version of Viktor Ullmans’ Opera – Der Kaiser von Atlantis with freelance Opera Director Polly Graham; check out some photos here.

Before all that happened I recorded pre-recorded loops for a piece I doing next year in my recital (I’ll allow a preview of what’s in store 😀  –>Leap)

Recording pre-recorded loops

Back to the Opera – I’m not an Opera fanatic I’ll be honest, but when it’s quirky and contemporary, as well as it being intense…that’s my jam guys! Only 2.5 hours of essentially relearning a condensed Opera (originally 1.5 hours…this was 30 minutes!!!) This was so that people would stay to watch and also we had to travel from Penarth Pier to Grangetown Pavillion Winter Fare then Delikatesy Mis (Polish Café in Cardiff) It was thoroughly enjoyable and I hope for this project to develop further!

From then onwards I have been attending jam sessions in Bristol, playing and watching world class musicians in the local area to me, Frome! It’s amazing who is around you – go to some local gigs in your area, get talking and see who’s around. You never know if you’ll be watching somebody who plays in a famous group!

Also, it’s been busy because I’ve been working hard. Mainly prepping my ideas for the New Year so I can deploy them at the most convenient time. For now I’m mostly practising, listening, researching and most of all. Learning. Investing in instruments (PSYCHED) and prepping for CUBA once again. I will be leaving very early in the New Year and will be away for 2 weeks, learning about Western Cuba/folkloric music and rumba! I can’t wait!

That’s all for today guys! Here is an album I recently listened to and fell in love with!

Break

The sumer gear collection…more latin gear has been added since 😀

The last week at the RWCMD came to a close on Friday! Now I’m back in my hometown of Bath and safe to say, my body has shut down. So I’m taking a break from playing for a little bit, so I can rejuvenate my mind and body.

Because of this, and also as a heads up, I may not be blogging next Sunday!

It’s important to take time off and I’m certainly one that can keep powering through no matter what, perhaps I’m stubborn but I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t been.

Listen to your gut more and your mind less.

It’s harder to be aware of this during the day than you think.

Next week I’m back in Cardiff for rehearsals at the Welsh Millennium Centre (WMC) in the Cardiff Bay. I bumped into the Operatic Director for an independent/contemporary Opera I did over a year ago and now I’m playing in her test run of her own company. Even though Opera isn’t my thing per se, but when there is room for creative direction then who knows where it could lead to! This is something I’m really excited about.

Over the next few weeks, as well as spending time with family and friends, I’ll be working hard on my own ideas and planning ahead for the next two and final terms at the Royal Welsh. Just so that I can really enjoy my time in Cuba and not think about missing two weeks of college! There will be lots of photos and experiences shared come early New Year!

That’s all for today guys! Take some time out for yourselves too!

Songs of the week

Here are two songs that I hope will set you up for the week no matter what you’re doing!

Some cheeky Bileo – You can Win – this is from the early 80s and it’s a massive soul song!

Roy Davis Jr ft Peven Everett – Gabriel (Live Garage Version) – the sound of human nature and original music is a beauty when you mix it with electronics

Rest Hard, Work Harder.

Everyday is a learning experience. I try to be as aware as possible, to make the most the any opportunity that may come my way. I think it’s important that we all have a similar attitude.

The reason being; I used to feel a bit awkward or uncomfortable, when I would see cliché images of motivational pictures on Facebook or Instagram. Though, those people are perhaps and probably, some of the most happiest and driven in whatever they are doing. One day I stopped and told myself, no matter how I felt or what had gone on, that I would be positive and drive that through my life. Because at least that way, it’ll channel through every aspect of your day to day life. We all have our off days, it’s human nature of course.

So if you’re somebody that may feel a bit out-of-sync with it all – bite the bullet and exclaim it as soon as you wake….no matter what anybody thinks.

This week, I put myself out there and contacted a percussionist that did a masterclass at the RWCMD. I had a great experience with the percussion guys from the BBC Concert Orchestra and observing the drummer and brass section from the BBC Big Band. Being brought in as a world percussionist or drummer for those sort of collaborations would be awesome to do – of course, that’s rather difficult or as one of my teaches put it; “yeah, and so do the other 10,000!” – one new learned experience, is that these musicians, are all average people. I mean, I knew this already but I think you only learn when you experience it.

Here’s a song from her to set the mood for the other part of the read -> Cleo Laine & Johnny Dankworth – Oh Lady Be Good

Main News

I had the most obscure experience, one that I’ve never had before. I went to see a group called Hang Massive. They’re a group that developed in my home town, Bath 😀

The instrument they play is called a Hang Drums. The sound that is created could be described as groundless (in a good way) or ethereal. TO THE POINT, in the gig they did in a few days ago, I was experiencing feelings space, a bit out of it, which lead to me passing out for a split second! Luckily I snapped out of it and luckily my weight went onto my friend! I don’t want to put you off from checking them out –>CHECK THEM OUT HERE<–it was merely a case of feeling the resonance, you should be fine in the comfort of your own room!! Also, check out -> Govardo | Bridge Over Troubled Water | Simon & Garfunkel Cover–they were part of the tour, his voice was stunning. They’ve been around for one year #SupportTheArts #SupportIndependentArtists

That’s all for today guys – Song(s) of the week include all of the links above!

Have a great week guys! Go for those new found experiences!
